Hyperthyroidism – Supplementation to bring it down
Hyperthyroidism means everything in your body is moving fast than normal so your body will need more nutrients than it would if your thyroid was operating at a normal speed.
First and foremost, get as good a quality of multi vitamin as you can afford. Cheap multivitamins aren’t really worth bothering with because the amount of vitamins and minerals are minimal and the absorption rate is low. Ask at your local health food store for a whole food multi. Just be prepared for a higher price tag. But your health is worth the investment. B Complex and Vitamin C both help manage stress which is a big issue with people who have hyperthyroidism and Graves’ Disease. Omega 3s are important for their anti-inflammatory properties and they are needed for correct glandular function.
L-Carnitine is an amino acid, which has been shown to counteract the effects of elevated thyroxine.
Bugleweed and lemon balm are two herbs that can be used in teas to help reduce TSH levels. Bugleweed contains acids that prevent thyroid damage; lemon balm inhibits antibodies from binding to the thyroid gland.
Unfortunately there aren’t too many supplements that are really effective at correcting hyperthyroidism unless it’s caught early. Medications can often cause a boomerang effect if treating mild hyperthyroidism and cause your thyroid to go hypothyroid. First and foremost, get your numbers checked with your doctor.
